BBS, answer to Diane's question

Before the internet, people ran private servers that you dialed directly into. Now, they use HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and people call them "intranets." For example, before the internet was popular, DR1 might still have this service, but you would dial into their phone number directly as opposed to your internet service provider.

You had chat rooms, file download services, pretty much everything you have now, but the screens were more text based, without the windows and uniformity of the internet. Where now you can go from one web site to another just by changing your address, before you had to disconnect your modem from one service and dial up another.

Many people and organizations still run BBS's (Bulletin Board Services) and they often can be accessed both directly and through the internet.

This message board is a type of BBS, as it allows direct postings to be viewed by a group of users. Deja.com is an excellent example of a behemoth general-purpose commercial BBS.
