Punta cana, barcelo

We will be staying in de Barcelo resort in punta cana. We will leave next Saterday. We liked the north and hope to sea something from the south. Is it easy to go to Santo Domingo?.. By car or bus. Or should we go with a group. We know it is possible to rent a car but, is it save to drive without a (total) insurance.
