My family will be traveling to the DR the last week of July, 2006. We have never been to the DR. Our son has been serving as a missionary for the last 18 months and we are going to pick him up. I just have some questions as far as what to pack and what are absolute necessities? How hot will it be? We are also looking for a nice hotel to stay at in the Santiago area. Any suggestions? Any travel info and tips will be greatly appreciated. This is our first trip outside of the U.S., needless to say we are very excited!!

Let's start with the hotel. Are you looking for the best hotel in Santiago or just a basic clean comfortable hotel? It will be very hot in July, so you would probably need a hotel with air conditioning.

Regarding clothing, many of the DR1'ers from Santiago will tell you not to wear shorts. My opinion is to wear what you are comfortable with. During the day, July is way too hot to wear long pants. Obviously, nighttime is a different story and one should dress accordingly for the venue.

BTW, first you first trip to the DR, you picked a good spot and I'm sure Hillbilly (a local resident for what seems to be forever) will give you much more specif advise.

I'm just looking for a nice clean place, definitely air conditioning. What is the reason for not wearing shorts? Sorry, I'm a little naive about traveling. I'm from San Diego, Ca. where the weather doesn't deviate much.

Before you decide on staying in Santiago proper, realize that the city of Santiago, as nice as it is, is a major city with over a half-million residents.
You might want to stay within an hour of Santiago, Peurto Plat for example, and experience one of the Dominican beach resorts.

HOWMAR has a point. If your son is done with his missionary work and is free to travel, you may want to go to Puerto Plata which is more of a traditional vacation spot. If you son needs to stay in Santiago and you want to be with him, then I advise you to stay in Santiago. Traveling to and from Santiago could be a bit troublesome for first time travelers.

Regarding the bit with wearing shorts. Most Dominicans adults don't wear shorts. Since Santiago is more of a business center than a tourist area, some of the Santiago residents (Santiagoans???) on this board have commented that only tourists wear shorts and if you want to fit in, don't wear shorts. (HB/AZB please correct me if that's not the gist of what's been said).

When I am in Santiago, I wear shorts in the daytime, slacks at night. Whereas when I am in the towns on either coast, I will sometimes wear shorts at night, even in the casinos. This dress code seems to be changing. Years ago, you were not allowed to wear shorts in some of the casinos.

If you have decided to stay in Santiago, talk to Hillbilly. He is a great guy, an expert on the area and has rooms available at his B&B as well! :classic:

When we were in Santiago in November we stayed at the Hotel Aloha Sol located on Calle de Sol, a very centralized area. It was a good, safe and air conditioned place but a little on the expensive side (DR standards) at around 68 bucks a night.
