Would the regular posters add to this general overview of jobs in the DR if so inclined I'm trying to set together an up to date sticky on job opportunties in the DR.
General
It is not easy to walk in and find a job in the DR. If you are not sent by your company, or you do not have a firm offer of a job, your chances of picking something up alongside your travel is slim.
Again, it is not easy to find a job in the DR. You are much better placed to find something by word of mouth, while inside the country, than by internet, or e-mail enquiries. Much of our world here still works according to who you know, and who recommends you for a position.
Salaries & Wages
Salaries and Wages are low. At current exchange rates, a sales assistant or a secretary or a receptionist can excpect to earn around US$250 per month, or less. An Dominican qualified accountant can expect to earn around US$600 per month.
Language
To work in the DR, you need to speak Spanish. French and German usually is an advantage, especially in tourism.
Some Possibilities
ESL type teaching (US$200 and up per month)
Wait staff or food staff in hotels (low wages and few tips outside of tourist season)
The DR is getting more and more call centers (USD200 and up per month plus incentives)
Tourist Type operations - e.g. dive master. Most positions are however filled by locals.
There are almost always opportunties in timeshare sales. You have to be really cut out for this, else you'll never make it.
Opportunities have come up recently for real estate agents, specifically on the North Coast.
All Inclusive Hotels have their own systems of recruiting and if you have a job already in one of these AI chains, you could ask for a transfer.
