I am looking for a hotel in Santiago. I travel with a young child so it can't be too shabby. Thanks

Look here:

How did I get this? I used the search function, which is something I think you will find most useful. Click on "search" at the top of the DR1 forums page and then enter key words for your search. In this case I entered "Santiago hotels". Keep in mind that the threads including the key words are listed by most recent, so the most helpful one may not be on the first page. There has been a lot posted on this topic.

I take it you didn't like the idea of a cabana. Just so you are clear, they are not "shabby" at all in the way most people use that term, and many are quite luxurious.

I doubt if a cabana, no matter how luxurious, would be appropriate for a young child.

Maybe, maybe not. On another thread I had explained what cabanas are to this OP.

Interestingly, the first time I stayed in a Santiago cabana I was traveling with my Dominican GF, her aunt, and her 8 year old (male) cousin. It was their idea, and they seemed to think it was quite normal. We got 2 rooms of course.

I think some people have the wrong idea about these places. I know for example that some male tourists think they are a place you FIND a woman as opposed to a place you TAKE a woman. Obviously, a lot of dirty deeds are being done dirt cheap on the premesis, but the whole idea of a cabana is discretion, and really all you ever see of the other patrons is the outside of their garage door or a glimpse as they speed away in their jipeta. With attendants on duty 24/7 to escort you to the available rooms, they may in fact be among the more secure accomodations available.

As far as the room itself is concerned, having only one bed may be a deal breaker for some in this situation and no problem at all for others. There may be some tacky "art" on the wall, featuring a naked woman perhaps, but nothing graphic, and parental control would be needed for TV viewing, which would also be the case in many "regular" Dominican hotels, which often have a porn channel or 2 available.

All in all, I would say it wouldn't be for everyone, but considering the cost and convenience factor, I thought it was an option which should be presented.
