You can "HOORAY" all you want to, BUT--------

If the DR Government doesn't get their act together on the Environmental and Electricity Problems, this Number One Slot will soon go the way of The Bahamas, The Turks & Caicos, The Windward & Leeward Islands and "Other" Tourist destinations by the "touring public".
Tourism is like the many "FADS" that develop in the States. it's whatever the public is thinking about at the time.
Several years ago, it was Acapulco, then Puerto Vallerta, then Cancun, then Mazatlan, then Jamaica, etc., etc.
What happened to all these "tourist destinations" was the public got 'burned out' on them and moved on to fresher destinations and different cultures to explore. I see no "cultural exploration" around here. Just AI's who are very complascent about the tourists they get. And until they begin to clean up the Sankie population and the prostitution in these areas, they are going to be in danger of the "premature ejaculation" of the tourists that they do get.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but you're a little pre-mature in your enthusiasm. Hope it turns out the way you want it to, tho.

Your killjoy,

Texas Bill

Agree with Bill on this one. The DR needs to develop other industries as well as start developing higher dollar/per tourist strategies so we can continue to compete even when the number of tourists start to dwindle as it eventually will. Pretty soon we will have additional competition from Cuba and even other up and coming destinations such as Honduras...

This is a very fragile and fickle business which can so south for many reasons (weak economy, hurricane, terrorism, etc)...

Another Rainy Day!!!

suarezn;

I hope the "one-track-mindedness" of the Government doesn't end up leading to a "dead-end siding" on this railroad.
Quality tourism is a must. Look at the ay the Rivera has maintained it's attraction through the years. These guys certainly know how to attract the high-dollar clients and they do it by catering to their every need andgive them the entertainment they demand for their buck. Not so in the places mentioned above, including the DR.
So, if the DR thinks it has a unique advantage over other places, wait a few years and see how many of the now expensive condos start going for pennies on the dollar because the owners have gottenfed up with the way they're being treated. Open camiones with welded in seats, eating dust and hot air as opposed to air-conditioned conveyances to take the people into the interior and the "quaint villages" where they can see how they compaare to the people here. Makes for great dinner conversation at home. But when that's done, it's 'bye-bye blackbird" and on to otherdestinations.
Better to spend the money on education, hospitals, etc. and set the rich put up themoney for the high grade condos and AI's. Keep the Gov't out of the business.

Yes Cap Cana is definitely a step in the right direction, but we have a very long way to go. My worry is that we're putting too much effort into a very fickle industry like tourism while not focusing enough on other types of industries such as information technology, banking, etc which would provide good paying jobs for many years to come.

We need to continue to develop higher yield tourism. It is amazing that Puerto Rico gets about the same amount of tourism related spent dollars as we do, even though they only have about 10,000 hotel rooms compared to The DR's 60,000+.

On a different note the article mentions how the Hazoury's bought the piece of property where Cap Cana sits for 25 million USD and today is worth 1 billion USD...nice profit margin. We probably will see one of these guys on forbes billionaire list one of these days.

nice profit margin that will persuade other investors to emulate, and that's where the beauty of Cap Cana lies ..
