Dubai Ports World, recently rejected in an attempt to manage six U.S. ports, is considering acquiring terminals in Halifax as an alternative in North America, says a Canadian senator.
Wilford Moore, a Nova Scotia senator who visited the United Arab Emirates-based company in September, said in an interview that the firm's executives are checking out terminals at the East Coast port.
He said with the firm being pressured to divest management of U.S. ports, Canada is viewed as another way to enter the North American market.
"They see a four-cornered grid of ports of entry and they see Halifax as being the northeast corner of their plan," said Moore.
The other "corners" are in the Dominican Republic, where the company is building terminals; Vancouver, where it has recently expanded terminals; and Long Beach, Calif., where DP World manages terminals.
