I was curious if anyone had information on what were the largest economic groups in the country 15-20 years ago. I know that many have come and gone over the course of recent years, so I'm interested in getting a sense of who the more stable groups (conglomerates or families) are.

Business Groups

I'm not sure if the larger business groups you are talking about have ever been tracked through the years. I have a book in my collection written in 1982 by Frank Moya called "Los Grupos Economicos Nacionales". In it, he lists these family groups in this order:

1. Vicini (sugar, real estate, banking, metals)
2. Bonetti (consumer products)
3. Vitienes (consumer products)
4. Barletta (auto distribution)
5. Viyella (agrochemicals, insurance)
6. Hazim (education, healthcare)
7. Pellerano (newspapers, banking, auto distribution)
8. Bermudez (rum, TV)
9. Leon (cigarettes, beer)
10. Perello (coffee)

I'd venture to guess that currently the top 5 list would be as follows:

1. Leon
2. Vicini
3. Corripio
4. Bonetti
5. Hazoury

Not sure who goes further down the list, but the farther down you go the more the list has changed through the years. Even at the top, only 3 years ago the Baez and Pellerano families would have been in the top 5.
