Can someone describe for me what the scene is like in Playa Cabarete. First of all how is the ocean there? Is the water really clear and calm- good for swimming>?

Then in March what kind of people go there? Is it mostly local dominican people or if not then is it mostly young and party crowd?

At night will there be tons of stuff to do?

I hope that it is not too touristy like Punta Cana

Let me know

Thanks

It's a beautiful beach, although not that calm.
It's a windsurfing beach.
Punta Cana looks like a cemetery, as compared to Cabarete, when it comes to partying.

Playa Cabarete has a reef on the outside on which the large waves break, but the bay itself is large and develops a secondary beach break. The water is in the 80's F, pleasant. In March there is much good windsurfing and kitesurfing. You can go surfing at Encuentro beach in the morning.

In March you will find a collection of young athletic surfing types from around the world, lot's of Euro and American/Canadian youth at the discos's.

From your posts it appears you are hoping to meet local women. You won't have a problem, though Cabarete is more of a tourist venue. In Sosua you will find many willing locals, but hold onto your wallet. Go to the beach disco's in Cabarete and for late night the disco in the Casino.

How's your Spanish??

Also i want to know how the newly instituted curfew has affected the party life in cabrete and around santiago?

Has this made the nightlife dull there or do people really close at 2 AM? when i am on vacation i really like to stay out late and party. Will i be able to do this?

Wasn't trying to be rude.
Was trying to make you see that the best vacations are not about all the details, they're about attitude.
If you have a negative attitude, you'll have a negative vacation.
Sure, I knew you might get offended, but it would be worth it if it helped you see the half full glass, instead of the half empty.
Nevertheless, you are correct that it wasn't very polite on my part.
I apologize.

hey well if you like to party then cabarete is the way to go! it is partaaay central! :) as for rio san juan and playa grande, they're not too far but it depends on how you get there too. If you hop on a public gua gua then it would take longer than renting a car or going with a group, but there definitely more fun if you want to experience the culture a bit more. something else really cool is the 27 waterfalls about an hour sw close to imber.
and the curfew.....hmmm well im not there right now but my friend there told me that they changed it back so that in touristy places there isnt one anymore. you might want to research that a bit more though.

anyone know if they still have the curfew????

The sea is 'playable' more than 'swimable', ie often quite big 'rolling' waves, so you can play in them. The east side of the bay is more calm with a very gentle shelf, so it doesn't get too deep too quickly. Then there is the reef. Stray further than that and the sea becomes extremely dangerous, not even many surf dudes there. Bozo beach (the opposite end) is entertaining to watch the kite surfers but can have strong undercurrents. I'm not a strong swimmer and I almost got into serious trouble there as the undercurrent took me back out to sea every time a wave came in (apparently, when that happens you should swim parallel to the beach for a while then swim in, better still, don't get into that position!) That area is about level with the Punta Goleta footbridge, which will make sense when you get here.

The beach has been busy today but is getting quiet now as I type this, mainly romantic couples out early or a few stragglers who've not gone for a shower. Between now (6:40pm ish) and 10pm ish it will be quiet with people out for a meal, then it will pick up again at about 10:30pm for a few hours of partying... Obviously, as my wife isn't with me on this trip, I'm always in bed by then, nor do I know if the local girls are friendly or pretty (honest dear) but they are and they are... so I've been told...

And Rocky's right, with a positive attitude, you'll have a ball, get upset if the water keeps running cold and you may as well have stayed at home!;)

You will love Cabarete. The beach is super swimmable. Most late afternoons before dusk the waves pick up and are fun to body surf on. The nigh life is great. The curfew hasn't really detered anyone from having fun. The casino stays open till around 4. Theres awlays parties everywhere , afterall most people are vacation and if not , well as Islandgirl pointed out, You should have absolutley no problem at all having a private party at whichever hotel you stay at.
Caution: some hotels are more "tolerant" than others. And stay in town. In the center of town are a few great inexpensive places to stay. You wont need a car , you can safely walk all over town and all the clubs and resturants on the beach.
Have fun!

To clarify and avoid confusion, I think we are saying the same thing in a different way, to me body-boarding is "playing" not "swimming". Either way it is great fun.
