We will be coming in to POP, and I have already gathered that the Airport is the last place to exchange my USD.
I read that Sosua had the best rates. I noted a place called Janet's Cambio. Is it still the best, and where exactly is it located? Also, can someone tell me, is there any place in Cabarete that has excellent exchange rates? Better yet, what are our best bets for excellent exchanges enroute to Cabarete?

Thanks.

I can't say I've ever looked at the different exchange rate between Cabarete & Sosua but I'd guess that unless you were exchanging a massive amount, the difference wouldn't be worth the time and hassle of going looking for the slightly better rate. In Cabarete, all the exchanges in the main street offer the same rate. The Cariba Tours office at the plaza just before Cabarete advertise a better rate but when I went in there, they weren't able to make any exchanges!

Thanks for the response. I plan on exchanging the majority of my cash to keep all transactions simple. From what I read on one of the threads, Sosua was said to have better exchange rates than Cabarete. I don't know if that has changed. I believe it was 33.2 pesos to the dollar. I dont want to go from spot to spot to compare rates though. If Cabarete is the same then I'll just do it there.

I looked at exchange rates in Sosua, Cabarete, and Charamicos last week. The best rates I found were slightly over 33 in one cambio in Sosua and in another in Charamicos. Cabarete seemed lower in the places I checked. The best POSTED rate I found was in Charamicos. If your walking up from the beach walk up the hill and near the top make a right theres a big blue sign in the window with the rate.

When I was there last time I checked the prices every time I was in both towns in the same day and normally the written price was a bit lower in Sosua. But you can get even lower by haggling. The most important thing is to at least ask 3 cambios in the same town/street before exchanging, this way you can be sure you are getting that day's best price (some cambios tend to just not change their price some days in it's good for them.

Go to any reputable cambio and you will get a competative rate which on any given day will be very close to the best rate available. There is no one place which always has the BEST rate. Who wants to spend their vacation chasing around trying to save a few pesos anyway? Also, it's not a good idea to exchange all your dollars for pesos at once. If you spend less than anticipated, you will be ripped off trying to exchange them back.

Thanks for the responses, I'll heed both of your advice.

I have no intentions on running around from place to place, but I will make note of the rates of at least three places before I exchange. From reading one of the threads, it seemed as if Cabarete was not ideal for getting your monies worth. I guess that was then. Anyhow, I've already worked out my spending money and my excursion money. I doubt I will spend more than $200-250 on spending alone. Probably more the former than the latter.

The Caribe Tours office in Cabarete and Janet's supermarket have the best rates in Cabarete. Judy's cambio, which is on the same side street as the Super Super Liquor store and Eddie's sports bar usually has the best rate in Sosua.... all good choices.

Just a note - the Caribe Office is just down the street from Nanny Estates... and they post the rates every day.

And the liquor store's not just super... it's super SUPER ;) Prices for liquor at Janet's are probably the best in Cabarete...but super super is cheaper...

Thanks so much. Good to know. For some reason I keep think that Nanny Estates is a little secluded. I figured Caribe Tours woud be in the middle of town. I can get my bottle of wine at Janet's for the first night and venture over to Super Super the next day. I read that you can get a stiff drink for $2.50 cents is this true?

Here's a local's tip: There is a tiny bar on the beach in Cabarete between Onno's and Bambu (the two "hotspots" for dancing drinking at night) called La Cosita Bar. The drinks there are the cheapest on the beach and you can take them wherever you want...it's less than 10 steps from either club. There a cuba libre is 60 pesos (less than $2).

Also, most of the beach bars have great happy hours where drinks are half price... :)

And while in Sosua...Rocky's charges less than $2 for cuba libres..and they're always "stiff"!

In Cabarete all the cambios in the main part of town are controlled by one person in SD that sets the rate. If you notice, every one of them has the same rate listed. All are well below market values.

You should only change your money in Cabarete at Caribe Tours, which is before town from your residence. I don't know about Janet's, as I never exchanged money there, but they may be good also.

Thanks David. Lol, That's how I learned about the cheap stiff drink. Someone mentioned "the bar in the middle" on Tripadvisors . I made sure to copy and pate it in my "Where to go "email to myself. I didn't know you could take your drinks with you though. Good to know. By the way, are we dancing in the sand? Or do they have wooden platforms? I had created an email a few days ago with all of the restaurants, discos, and casino suggestions and tips. Onno's and Bambu were def. on the top of the list. Now, lol, what time exactly does happy hour start? I'll have to enjoy that one too. How do I find Rocky's in Sosua? Is it a strip like Cabarete? I've read so much about Rocky's on here. I def want to pop in.

Thanks SKY. It seems like Caribe Tours, Janet's supermercado and Janet's cambio in Sosua are the place to look out for, so I will stick to those.
