Well, myself, I got used to it. And I like it better than unlimited time. I wouldn't be againts, though, having 1AM closing on weekdays and 3am closing on weekends.

And I am happy at least women don't make you stay out untill 5 am and instead you can go home to do other things.

This was misreported and only applies to Cabarete at the moment. Closings are at normal hours in Puerto Plata.

No they just had to select a place to start - it was Cabarete. Simple

Curious

I have been told that the curfew in Cabarete is 3am, EVERY NIGHT. Is this true?

I do not understand how they can change Cabarete and not Sosua. More drunks on the road trying to get two more hours of drinking in Cabarete.

Yes, it's true. 3 a.m. every night.

Heavy police presence on the beach in Cabarete last night (for a non-holiday). One at a time during the night, I saw them escort 5 people off the beach & I suspect on to jail for whatever reason. I heard of another 8 being picked up as a group out in front of Casa Nova.

There were, I'd guess, at least 8-10 officers out and around on the beach and more in the street. Mostly Politur... and a few that were obviously police but not in uniform.

so again my question is why caberete and sosua or POP ??

I would guess that it is the pressure from the resorts to keep and attract clienets!

The DR used to known for a party all night vacation spot....and one reason people go on vacation is let loose, and they dont want to be told to stop at midnight!.....because they are on vacation all week long not just the weekends.

so those places listed are PARTY towns with tourist resorts.....

its places like Santiago and San Fransisco de Macoris, and La vega that wont get the relaxed rules I bet for a long time...

I would imagine that the east coast isnt the party scene like the north coast is. I also would guess that more peopel on the east coast STAY onsite of their resorts at night than do the north coast resorters, even those in Playa Dorado.

I loved to know how many groups of partying young men and women that canceled their plans to visit the DR because they found out you cant go drinking and dancing all night like they used to.

Bob,
I have no idea how many foreigners may have cancelled plans, but I have Dominican friends in the capital who had come to Cabarete every 4-6 weeks for years.
After the curfew was put in place, they came a few times, then stopped because, for them, it wasn't as much fun as before. They now go to an AI in Punta Cana where they said the 2 a.m. curfew didn't apply. Not sure if the 3 a.m. curfew will encourage them to come back. People fall into new habits...

I had a couple of friends who came down with me to Cotui and had such a good time that this years they were going to come down with a bunch of other friends (8 guys in total). When I told them about the curfew they decided this was not for them and went to Costa Rica instead. Well they liked it even better over there, because it was clean, no power outages, and they still had lots of fun. A couple of them are even considering buying land down there...Lost opportunity because of this stupid rule.

BTW these are all pretty well off young guys (late 20's early 30's) who spend tons of money when they travel. Cotui and The DR in general could definitely benefit from this kind of tourism.

I won't bring any of my friends down or recommend The DR to anyone until it changes. I myself will probably start going somewhere else, as I don't need this aggravation. Heck you can stay up until 2:00 every day even here in Michigan, and that's saying a lot...

Also if I hear another person claim that this is good cause it reduces crime I'm going to choke him/her myself...Sorry but this really gets to me.

suarezn, yes Costa Rica is gaining popularity with Brazil, DR and other places.
a lot of foreigners are retiring there and you have a variety of weather.

no curfew and prostitution is legal is also a big draw
