Hi
My self and my girlfriend will be travelling to the Dominican Republic for the first time in September. We will be staying in the Viva Wyndham hotel in Playa Dorada. We will be looking to go on a few trips around the area. Can anyone recommend any? Also good people to book the trips with or should we just book them with the tour rep or the hotel?

In addition has anyone been to the hotel before? can you tell us a little about it and the surrounding area?

Thanks
Steve

If

Yopu are obviously staying at viva wyndham DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING FROM INSIDE THAT RESORT. Like the earlier poster said, look around and do homework..... If you book inside the walls of wyndham you might as well give them your wallet, passport, and your girlfriend too.... reason is they are way more expensive than out of the compound guides.....

oops

almost forgot, the hotel is clean and the beach is really close, not a long walk at all..... rooms are great, if you dont mind the disco music all night, well until about 12 anyway its a good place.... Stayed there last summer, was enjoyable, but be warned to find things to do on the weekend if you are there. The flod gates opne with the locals which isnt bad, but if you want to relax then walk around the complex(playa dorada).... One more thing if you need anything from the gift shop, go tto the market right down the street and get what you need... No sense in paying 2 dollars american for a tiny tiny kit kat.. LOL unless you are craving it.... when in sept. will you be there i will be there from 9-12 to 9-15 ...

I had a feeling it would be a lot cheaper booking from outside the resort. Thanks for confirming for me.

thanks

Thanks I'm glad to hear the hotel is OK. I was reading trip adviser the other day and was getting a little worried as it was receiving some poor reviews lately. Mind you one person said they'd never go back because there were bugs running on the path. how pathetic is that!? We should be arriving sometime late on the 13th of September and are there for 2 weeks.

Thanks
Steve

If you are there for 2 weeks make sure you do some exploring. It might pay to hire a cab (get it outside the complex) negotiate a price (should be around $100 US) and get out to Playa Grande, Caleton or maybe Santiago for the day.
Get into Sosua (a great beach there as well) or Caberete for a day. Discover something besides an AI resort. And don't listen to those who work for the hotel who will tell you it is unsafe to travel off the reservation unless it is with one of their tours. They just want to keep your $$$ "inhouse"

I second the recommendation on Isaira Tours. They are fabulous.

Get to Sosua Bay, Cabarete, make sure to do the safari to Damajagua Falls.

IF you want to go into PUerto Plata to check out the local nightlife - let me know....

For nightlife at Playa Dorada, the tourists seem to like Mangu the best - it is attached to the American Casino at Holiday Village Resort. Also Hemingways at Playa Dorada is ok.

When you get tired of the food at the hotel check out Playa Dorada Golf Course Restaurant - awesome food - good service and good pricing.

Take a taxi to downtown Puerto Plata, check it out, lots of old buildings, some shopping, have a drink on the Malecon, watch the goings on....
