A couple of posts in the last few days have mentioned that the price of gas is something like US$5/gallon. Given that, would it actually be more cost-effictive to take Caribe Tours say, from Santo Domingo to Sosua, rather than drive, even if you have your own car?

For one person, no doubt about it.
One way on the bus is less than 10 bux.
The shortest route between the two is 130 miles, I believe.
So you'd have to be getting 65 miles to the gallon to match the bus price, and that wouldn't account for wear & tear on the vehicle.
