Don't send a cargo container or vehicle to the port without first contacting a broker. We recently had a client come to us seeking a quotation to process a container and vehicle through customs - after these items had arrived. The client was shocked to find out what the taxes were. And unfortunately, he did not have enough money to pay them.

It's prudent to know what the various fees are before you decide to ship anything to the Dominican Republic.

Fees

the fees seem to vary depending on the day though

You are right. Fees can be arbitrary and capricious. That's why it is so very important to get a broker involved before your possessions set sail across the ocean. We actually negotiate with customs and obtain for our clients an estimate of what they will need to pay long before they ship their possessions.

Some advice to those looking to move here.

Send Banker Trust an email and let them handle the shipping, customs etc.
They have lots of experience on the north coast.
