The sadly misinformed Lonely Planet guidebook say "DR: vegetarians need not apply". that is such a crock! First of all, get ready for the most wonderful fresh fruit juices you have ever had in your life, and the most fantastic fresh salads. Even the orange juice you will not believe. This is the opinion of one who has been a vegetarian for 40 years. Worried about the water? Well, so are the Dominicans! The restaurants use filtered, bottled water for preparation of juices, salads, and for making ice, etc. So don't be afraid of the ice at the better venues (you can always ask.) Umm, I avoided eating anything from street vendors.....

Staying at Dona Elvira (I loved it there) or Mercure? There is a NEW all-vegetarian restaurant "Restaurant Vegetariano" (not mentioned in Lonely Planet)! on Calle Padre Billini, right next door to the Dona Elvira Fantastic food, clean, wonderful people. Great prices. And their food is many cuts above what you will find at "Ananda," as well as being easy walking distance from anywhere on El Conde in the Zona.

I found great salads at Hotel Mercure (their avocado salad blew my mind!) , and a fantastic rice dish that was vegetarian as well. Like avocado? Get ready for a treat in the DR! Great salad at Jaragua as well.

A mild aside on the water topic, I kept bottled water in my hotel room to rinse my hands and face after washing, and for brushing my teeth.

I agree with the OP - vegetarians do fine in Santo Domingo - most places have vegetarian options, even the simplest plato del d?a comedores.

I've posted about the specialist vegetarian caf?s and restaurants in Santo Domingo in past threads - they should come up in a search.

Special mentions for Taiwanese tea garden Para T? in El Mill?n and the new cake shop in Bella Vista, La Patisserie, which has an incredible range of veggie snacks as well as luscious cakes.

A friend told me about the new vegetarian restaurant in the Zona Colonial but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Before long...

I'm not a vegetarian but I went to an excellent vegetarian restaurant last night called:

Lotos
Av. 27 de Febrero No.400, Quisqueya
(809) 535 3319

This may already be known but I thought I'd post it just in case.

how did they come to this conclusion? i mean, basic dominican cooking is a variation of rice, beans, salad and chicken on the side. since the chicken (or any other meat) almost always comes separate, anybody not comfortable with eating meat can just order their meal without it. hell i bet you'll find a bunch of people who lead an almost vegetarian lifestyle for the simple reason that they can not afford to buy meat. so i really don't see what problems a vegetarian would have in the dominican republic apart from maybe people not grasping the idea of not eating meat for ethical reasons and looking at you funny when you tray to explain the concept.
