Why So Expensive from SJU to SDQ?

What the heck is going on? - I have a buddy of mine in SJU who wants to meet up with me in the DR for a February trip. I am flying from JFK to SDQ for $318 Round Trip. The Cheapest that I can find for a flight from SJU to SDQ is $451 on AA.

Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way to travel from Puerto Rico to Santo Domingo? - What about a ferry?
