The following comes from: Sosua News & Periodico El Neuvo Norte
Josefina Convents (originally from Belgium) is a real-estate entrepreneur and has been investing in various projects in and around Cabarete for the past 16 years. She also invests considerable sums in various development projects that benefit the local population along the north coast. For example, she sponsors sporting events, schools and medical aid for the poor. She is generally viewed as an important resident in Cabarete, and is particularly popular because of the many donations she gives to the poor.
But Ms Covents is now threatening to pull out of all her investment projects because the local authority has charged her an additional tax bill. During her press conference she displayed the authorised receipts (complete with signatures, stamps and seals) proving that she had paid 658,000 pesos in taxes. The local authorities refuse to recognise these documents and are trying to force her to pay the tax again.
Ms Covents is personally asking the federal government, via the president Leonel Fern?ndez, to act against this injustice. If this civil action is not corrected, she will pull out of all her investments in Cabarete, which will mean a huge loss to the local community.
