DR government debates private property access to beaches
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Legislators in the Dominican Republic are debating whether to allow residents access rights to private property so they can reach beaches, rivers and lakes.
President Leonel Fernandez recently submitted a proposal to amend the constitution, which currently bars people from entering such property.
The proposal has the support of Miguel Vargas Maldonado, leader of the opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party. But several members of both parties rejected the idea and sparked a debate Wednesday.
One of the Caribbean country's biggest draws is its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters along its eastern coast. It is home to dozens of celebrity homes and exclusive resorts.
