oh yes !!! when your there and your renting a car , your now the target there , seat belts must be on , no talking on cell phones while driving etc. they now need to justify there existence as officers , forget about the car in front of you or behind you with no doors , ten packed in the car with there legs hanging out all while the driver has just oppened a fresh bottle of Brugal, NOOO! lol, they know who has the money to pay the ticket!!! I was under the impression that AMET was the only ones stopping cars and writing tickets, Polacia National is out of the business I thought, these would the the ones in gray

Just wave at them

Do not stop. They are not supposed to be stopping people...

Do not give them money. It is like feeding the bears...or the crocs...don't do it..

I don't have any money. Okay let's go to the station....

Screw the bastards...as long as you are inthe right, just keep going...wave and smile at them...

While in Sosua, I was stopped by a plain clothed motorcycle cop and escorted to the police station for having a run in with 2 other motorist who were going the wrong way on a one way street and I refused to back up for those motorist and luckily a haitian or dark skinned Dom told me he was the police or it could have gotten uglier and I happily backed into the police station and then they told me I could leave, but they confiscated the car I was driving , after I put them on the phone with a friend of mine....

Talk about miss-justice and all of that for the 500 peso pay off, the next day, made by my friends Dom girlfriend, the next day...............

Which I would have rather given to him to avoid the crap, I went through........

If that was my first time in DR, I would have gotten on the next plane leaving and never came back, but instead, I dropped my things off at my friends condo and proceeded back to town and picked up one of the prettiest female friends I could lay my hands on....Problem Relieved Rapidly

I just smile and pretend not to understand a word they say. I just nod my head rapidly and smile. Eventually they get frustrated when cars pile up behind and wave me on.

Christmas is just a few weeks away, it?s the usual run before la nochebuena and el a?o nuevo. In January all is back to ?normal?. I had to slag off these guys (AMET and PN) three times this week.

Yup,
it is Xmas and they need cash.

how easy is it to buy a police uniform I wonder

Buying, stealing, borrowing or renting police uniforms with or without the officer inside them has been a popular way of committing crime here, especially on the main highway at night.

If the police that try to flag you down have bullets and gasoline to shoot at or chase you then they are not real cops so you should not stop.
If they do not have bullets and gasoline then you do not need to be stopping anyways - or so I have been told.

Dominican logic, I guess.

I was stopped in Santiago in October on Circunvalacion. It was supposedly a seatbelt and security check. My wife was with me(born and raised in Santiago) and she said to be very careful as the cop ask me to step out of the vehicle. While the cop was looking over my licence, registration and rental agreement she stayed in the car and would not come out. The cop gave me back my licence and papers and was fishing for money. My wife told him that I do not carry cash and only use my credit card. He then said to me I could go but he needed a little something for dinner, I leaned over and told my wife and she took 200 pesos from her purse and I handed it to him. She told me that sometimes these thieves in uniform will plant drugs in your vehicle if you are not careful and that is why she would not come out of the car. She also said that if you do not piece them off with a couple bucks they can make your life miserable and invent or create infractions, for example, all of a sudden now you have a smashed in tail light. I did not want to give that scumbag one peso and I agree that feeding them is not the right thing to do but I thought at the time it is probably not worth getting into a hassle with these cretins.
