Government opens 12 shelters for women at risk of gender violence

The Presidency announced the opening of 12 shelters for women that are victims of gender violence. The initiative is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Women. The government invested RD$200 million in the program. The shelter program covers women at risk and their children under 14 years of age. The shelters provide safe accommodations, food, health services, social, legal and psychological assistance, and have educational spaces for children.

President Abinader made the announcement at the Presidential Palace on 4 May 2021.

With the incorporation of these 12 new shelters, protection will be provided to approximately 7,735 women per year, representing an increase in coverage of 550% compared to what was available in the past government.

Abinader said that RD$300 million has been budgeted for the first-year operations of the shelters.
