Underground river floods out fish farmers in Guerra

The Brujuelas river flooded a large area around the town of Guerra. What is newsworthy, is that this river is mostly underground from its origin in Los Haitises in the Northeast all the way to Boca Chica in southcentral Santo Domingo province. The river waters come to the surface briefly in Bayaguana and Monte Plata, but go underground again as the river passes through Guerra and the small surrounding villages.

The freshwater from the river is pumped into tanks in Guerra, where small business people raise fish, mostly Tilapia, for sale in the markets in Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Macoris.

With the onslaught of the rains from Fiona, the river pushed to the surface and washed away millions of pesos in fish, destroying the local businesses.

With fish flowing in the streets of Guerra, the people rushed to gather them up for home cooking...
