Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly accuses Haitian businessman Gilbert Bigio of providing “illicit financial and operational support to armed gangs” through money laundering and “other acts of corruption.” Others accused are Haitian business people Reynold Deeb and Sherif Abdallah.
The Canadian government announced the sanctions fall under the Special Economic Measures (Haiti) Regulations in response to the egregious conduct of Haitian elites who provide illicit financial and operational support to armed gangs.
The sanctions impose a dealings prohibition on the businessmen and their transacting in Canada, effectively freezing any assets they may hold in Canada.
Gilbert Bigio is known as the wealthiest person in Haiti.
