The two cruise ship ports in Puerto Plata, on the north coast, are expecting 71 cruise ships in December 2023, the Ministry of Tourism reports.

The natural and cultural wonders of the north coast of the Dominican Republic have consolidated Puerto Plata as one of the most popular with cruise ship travelers.

Puerto Plata has two cruise ship terminals. One is Amber Cove operated by Carnival Cruise in the Maimon beach area, about 15-minute drive from the city of Puerto Plata. A second is Taino Bay, which operates out of the Port of Puerto Plata right in Puerto Plata City. Amber Cove opened in November 2015 and Taino Bay in December 2021.

As reported, 25 cruise ships are scheduled to dock at Amber Cove. Another 46 will dock at Taíno Bay.

The northern regional director of tourism, Atahualpa Paulino highlights the arrivals boost the local economy. He said the high cruise season...

I wonder how much effect these ships really do have on the local economy. Most of those who get off do organised excursions so don't spend much money in local shops.

That kind of data can be found via City Hall or the local Chamber of Commerce (if they're tracking that along small shops around POP). That could be interesting if they're doing it so.

Of course. I think @MariaRubia was refering about the impact around both harbors. If small businesses around are really having an impact (in terms of revenue, new customers or new ventures around opened during this year.

I can guarantee that if anyone is benefiting from this financially, it won't be small local businesses. As with everything in DR those who benefit from the large-scale money are the big rich families, never the poor guys.

Maria, are you sure? The first time I went to PP was to visit a friend. We choose to do the 4 wheeling. I don't remember exactly what we spent but it was a over a couple of hundred $ when you included food and drink. If the excursion people choose this route, it could benefit small business.

While I agree that you do have a (partial) point there, I'm happy to say that quite a few members of my wife's family are benefiting from an additional revenue/work resulting from these ships, even if not all directly, but still. And they are by all means no big businesses...

It depends how long they stay, is it a few hours or a whole day? Souvenirshops could do well as people are eager to prove “look I have been here”.
The scale of organized excursions would rule out small businesses.

I don't believe any of them stay a whole day....

The greedy slime who control (pick one) these monopolies make sure every single penny is accounted for and I seriously doubt the "locals" are even seeing these cruise ship passengers unless they are paying dues/ bribes to the transportation "companies".
