The World Consumer Day in the Dominican Republic was marked by differences of opinion between the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (ProConsumidor) and different NGOs that argue that prices are just too high across the board.

The National Observatory for Consumer Protection noted the high prices for plantains, rice, and some tuber crops. Minister of Agriculture Limber Cruz Lopez has stated that much farm produce has dropped in price, but the NGO spokespersons say this is not so. The NGOs also call for more local ProConsumidor offices so that complaints can be filed quickly and more efficiently.

Electricity rates were also on the table together with the dangers of Artificial Intelligence in the banking sector. The NGOs said that AI was to blame for a lot of fraudulent actions taken against people’s accounts.

So totally agree with the NGO, I'm not normally a comment or but now staying in the DR for longer periods compared to other countries the DR citizens consumers are pretty much at the sellers power. Both in price and warranty. It's very much a buyer beware environment here in the DR. With little or zero recourse for bad product or false representation. Not a fan of over government controls but buyers should have basic recourse rights for obviously fraudulent activities and price gouging.
