Does the airport not have a maintenance team that does daily inspections? Definitely doesn't look good.

"La información fue servida en una nota de prensa por Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) en la que indicó que el bache u hoyo en la pista se produjo durante el aterrizaje de un avión Boeing 787-900 de Air Europa, que desprendió asfalto en una zona que estaba prevista a ser intervenida para mantenimiento en los próximos días."

So here Aerodom actually declares that they were aware of the damaged runway and let passenger airliner land regardless? Way to run an airport... I hope they have to pay for all the damage caused... I have to say, the only reason we'd use POP as an airport, is because it's in POP, but PUJ airport is something else (in a positive way)...

Fifteen flights affected either cancelled or diverted.
That would had been avoided if Las Américas had 2 runways. Las Américas is the main airport in the DR with scheduled flights (PC has the most flights, but most are charter or seasonal while in Las Américas most as scheduled yearround) still has one runway. Most of it is the one built by Trujillo in 1959 to boot.

Who owns all that land on the east side of the airport? Plenty of room to put in another runway there.

The government. Technically is a national park. I don’t think trasferring a small band along the current property of the airport (which is also owned by the government) will cause much of an impact onpreserving that place. If they need to compensate, acquired the same amount of space on the edge of a national park already in existen and reforedt that if need be. The giant national park by Bayahibe appear to have the same vegetation as that one next to Las Américas.
