Earthquake causes structural damages in northwest

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, at 11:59pm, causing significant damage to buildings in the northwest, from Montecristi to Puerto Plata provinces. The epicenter was located 11.7 kilometers deep, southeast of Guayubín in the Montecristi province, according to the state university UASD earthquake center report. The town of Villa Elisa was 5 km from the epicenter of the quake.

The tremor, which was also felt in neighboring Haiti, resulted in cracks appearing on the interior and exterior walls of a local public high school in Valverde, as reported in Hoy.

Residents reported feeling the quake strongly, forcing many to rapidly leave their homes for safety.
