A study carried out by the Ministry of Education (Minerd) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), which covered the 2023-2024 school year, shows a significant improvement in Spanish and Mathematics levels for students in Dominican public schools. This is encouraging news.
While critics might call the results “cherry-picking”, any positive news on the educational front is very welcome.
Regarding that area of mathematics known as “calculations and counting” the study found a 13% improvement in those students who produced ‘acceptable’ or ‘satisfactory’ results. Likewise, in testing Spanish Language, the results for the category for ‘writing different texts’ went from 17% approval, all the way up to 50% approval, a 33% jump.
All these improvements are tied to a program called “Building the Basis for Learning (CON BASE in Spanish).
