Juan Ariel Jimenez, former Minister of Economy, and professor in Harvard University, recommends the government reduce current spending and tax evasion instead of increasing taxes. In an article in Listin Diario, he looks into alternatives to the submitted tax increase proposal made by the Abinader administration.

He estimates a middle class family will have to pay RD$54,844 to RD$103,865 in increase in taxes in 2025, as per the proposed tax amendment.

The dean of Economics of the state university UASD, Antonio Ciriaco, also mentions that the middle class is being asked to bear the burden of the tax reform, as reported in El Dia. He said the proposed new taxes on real estate will hurt the middle class. The UASD held meetings on 9 and 10 October to debate the proposal for fiscal reform and alternatives.

The man on the street would say this tax reform opens more opportunities for scandals, abuse at the expense of the middle-class taxpayers.
