The Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) announced on Friday, 11 October 2024 the results of its elections. Eduardo Hidalgo received the votes to repeat as spokesperson for the public school teachers for three more years. He secured over 62% of the votes, or 66,514. The runner-up was Nolberto Ortiz with 21.58% of the votes, or 23,146 votes.
The public school teachers union is probably the largest and strongest in the country. The highly-politicized union has been criticized as a cause of many of the problems of the school system, given that on most occasions, the ADP has been known to put its interest in securing teacher privileges way above the welfare of the students and quality in education.
