Major League Baseball announced that Dominican slugger Juan Soto has agreed to a 15-year US$765 million contract with the New York Mets. Soto is coming off a fantastic 2024 season with the New York Yankees.

The deal is described as the biggest free-agent contract in MLB history. The contract is the largest and the longest the sport has seen. Soto’s pact surpasses the US$700 million deal inked by Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in December 2023.

“It’s a contract fit for the game’s best hitter, and Soto arguably is that,” reads the story in mlb.com. Soto just completed his age-25 season and already has 201 home runs, five Silver Slugger Awards and a batting title (2020). In 4,088 career plate appearances, Soto owns a .285/.421/.532 slash line. His on-base percentage is the best among active Major Leaguers.

How many home runs can he hit when he is 40 years old? At 26 he is good for 10 years if no injuries. After that he is stealing money. But he earned it........

These long contracts usually don't work out well for the team...but good on him for getting it. I do kinda wish MLB had a salary cap as does the NBA and NFL, so the smaller market teams could compete a bit more. As it is now, they can't afford to keep their young rising stars because the big teams just pay the big bucks with no real constraints, Not a factor in this particular deal, the Yankees decided to let him go because they have other big bills to pay.

None of the money was deferred which is interesting. Many of the "big contracts" have a portion of the money deferred so I thought this was interesting. He also has an opt out option after 5 years. I agree about the salary cap, it would be nice for smaller markets to have the same opportunities when it comes to signing players. Will it happen, time will tell.

This was in fact a bad deal for the Mets. They are paying tremendous money for years that he might not be worth more than any other player, if he even can play at 40.......
