The National Unified Transportation Central (CNTU) took part in the official beginning of a process aimed at helping Greater Santo Domingo get rid of scrap metal lining some streets and alleys in the National District and Santo Domingo province urban areas. This is part of what is called the “Zero Scrap 2025 Plan” that consists of taking abandoned vehicles to a scrap yard where they are fed into a huge crusher and sent to recycling.

As one of the organizers of the event, the CNTU brought together officials from the Ground Transportation Agency (Digesett) and transportation associations to witness the beginning of the plan. I will believe when I see it. There is too MANY old cars in DR, it needs to be removed. Time for newer cars, say after 2016.

So what happens when the cars are crushed? Will they go to a landfill or be shipped offshore for smelting/recycling? I’m not aware of any large scale smelter operation in the DR.

I'm not clear on this. Are we talking shit-mobiles that are running or are we talking about rusted out chasses? Because I can't see how the latter will improve traffic by 1/2.
I guess non running cars on flat tires if they have them. These are still often advertised on Feyboo with “todo nitido”. They slow down traffic on the smaller streets when they were parked there.

Don't worry, it is only a plan for which they need a couple of millions.
In 3 months everybody in the photo drives a new SUV and the "scrap vehicles" will still be in the streets...up to the next "plan".

I'm talking about the taxis that look like the tin can I used to kick down the street than twist them in half a stick a firecracker in can blow them into the sky

I posted the other day about vehicles being scrapped in good condition. Here's some pictures of a scrap yard I've visited:
