President Luis Abinader travels to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, 5 March 2025 accepting an invitation from the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) to speak at its Executive Summit, El Dia reports.

The 2025 AAFA Executive Summit will be held in person from 5-7 March 2025, at the InterContinental Washington D.C. at The Wharf, bringing together executives from retail, apparel, footwear, and fashion accessory brands from the United States and around the globe for two days of thought-provoking dialogue.

The visit comes at a time when the United States is the focus of much controversy after the imposition of new trade tariffs. The Dominican Republic seeks to benefit from nearshoring contracts and the local free zone industry sector at present is booming.

Being proactive and trying stay ahead of the curb.
Abinader is worth 100's of millions of USD.

Not trying to impose politics but the current President to the north of us seems to have a lot of respect for businessmen who are doing the right thing. Perhaps these tariffs will benefit the DR down the road.

A lot of footwear companies pulled out and went to China. (I worked for them.. twice)

What you gain in reduced labor costs you lose by having a ton of footwear on slow moving ships.

I'm not sure what he can offer to bring them back.

I didn't say they were losing on shipping costs, in fact, shipping by boat is as cheap as it gets.

There are times when companies have trailers with finished product that are shipped weekly, and you have product on 4 or 5 ships in transit.
