President Luis Abinader said the situation of Haiti came up in the brief conversation with US President Donald Trump when the two met for the first time during the Pope Francisco funeral in Rome. President Abinader said that Trump spoke of liking the Dominican Republic, where he has played golf in the past. He also spoke of the Dominican Republic doing well and mentioned Haiti. Abinader said Trump told him: “You are doing well, the country is doing well.” Then he said Trump lamented what is happening in Haiti and said the situation in Haiti is critical.
When Abinader mentioned the Summit of the Americas that the DR expects to host in December 2025 in Punta Cana, Trump said he expects to come for the summit. The Summit of the Americas is organized jointly with the US State Department.
