While Mother’s Day is a globally celebrated holiday, its date varies widely across countries. In the Dominican Republic, it falls on the last Sunday of May – a tradition with deep historical roots, Diario Libre explains. The advertising and promotions of major stores remind Dominicans Mother’s Day this year is on Sunday, 25 May 2025.
Unlike the United States, where Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May, the Dominican Republic’s celebration was established later and independently. The origins trace back to 1926, during the presidency of General Horacio Vásquez. His wife, Trina de Moya, and educator Ercilia Pepín spearheaded the creation of the first “Pro-Mother’s Day Committee” in Santiago de los Caballeros.
