A feature in N Digital by Raul German Batista blasts those who enjoy the bounties of the Caribbean Sea-bordering maritime boardwalk, but leave behind litter. The journalist reports that the city government spent US$50 million to build the Paseo Maritimo Malecon, spanning 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) along the Caribbean Sea as a vibrant public space for recreation and tourism. Yet, the scenic waterfront is continuously impacted by litter left behind by the nighttime visitors.
As things stand, while intended as a gathering place for outdoor activities and a catalyst for urban renewal, the Malecón now grapples with this serious problem of accumulated trash, primarily due to carelessness from those enjoying the nightlife, especially on weekends.
