The Abinader government has the lowest public capital investment in decades. A report in Diario Libre says the government is only investing big in sports ventures. The government is preparing to host the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games in summer 2026. The Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center is undergoing a major renovation.
According to data from the National System of Public Investment, capital investment between January-March 2025 was RD$12.8 billion, down from RD$52.6 billion for the same quarter in 2024, a 75% decline.
As the number of government entities has burgeoned in recent years, the availability of funds for capital investments has declined. The Abinader administration has resorted to private investments and public-private partnerships to carry out works that in the past had been fully-funded government capital investments.
