Michelin stars are awarded to the restaurant not the chef.

That is true as the star is derived from several factors including ambiance and service. However, NO restaurant will ever receive a star without the current head chef putting that food on the plate. So, it's tricky for a restaurant to maintain the status without a chef that will deliver consistently year after year.
