The Dominican Republic continues to need to spend more on its security due to external factors – mainly dealing with crime from Haiti and drug trafficking. President Luis Abinader announced he will be signing an agreement with Portugal as early as this week to acquire at least two, and potentially four, offshore patrol vessels. President Luis Abinader announced that these new additions to the Dominican fleet will significantly bolster the nation’s efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.

The agreement is the culmination of a year-long process, stemming from Abinader’s visit to Portugal approximately 12 months ago. Since then, the deal has been under continuous negotiation.

“From that visit, we have now reached an agreement to acquire at least two, perhaps even four, offshore patrol boats, which we did not previously possess in the Dominican...

Just when you think the comedy show’s over… boom—Dominican Republic getting patrol boats from Portugal to fight drug trafficking. 😂 Boats! Like the narcos are out here on paddleboards! These guys are flying low in high-speed boats with radar and satellite phones, and we’re out here getting gifted tugboats. I can already see it now—the commanders using these "anti-drug" boats to take their families out to Isla Saona on the weekends. 🎣🍻 You really can’t make this stuff up. This country is elite-level comedy

Corruption among Dominican Republic officials and police is a significant issue, with numerous cases involving ties to drug trafficking. While exact numbers are difficult to ascertain, several high-profile incidents and systemic patterns shed light on the extent of the problem.

Notable Cases of Corruption

  • Operation Gavilán (2023): This operation led to the arrest of 12 individuals, including a National Police officer and a prosecutor, accused of eliminating criminal records for drug traffickers and other criminals in exchange for bribes.
  • Operation Pandora (2024): A significant scandal uncovered a network within the National Police trafficking over 900,000 rounds of ammunition to Haiti, highlighting the deep-rooted corruption within the force. haitiwire.com
  • Operation Medusa (2018): This operation revealed a scheme where police officers were extorting drug traffickers, leading to the arrest of at least 10 officers.

Systemic Issues and Statistics

  • Dismissals for Drug Ties: Between 2007 and 2012, over 500 police and military officials were dismissed for involvement in drug trafficking. dr1.com+1insightcrime.org+1
  • Involvement in Contract Killings: Former police officers are reportedly involved in the majority of contract killings in the Dominican Republic, often related to drug disputes.
  • Bribery Networks: Micro-trafficking networks have been known to pay local police over $100,000 in bribes each month, indicating widespread corruption at the local level. insightcrime.org

Challenges in Addressing Corruption

Despite efforts to reform, including the dismissal of over 5,000 security force members in recent years, corruption remains pervasive. Factors such as low salaries, lack of oversight, and systemic impunity contribute to the ongoing problem. insightcrime.org
In summary, while precise figures are elusive, the available evidence underscores a significant and entrenched issue of corruption among Dominican Republic officials and police, particularly in relation to drug trafficking.

They better get a couple of FRISC’s. Cheaper and faster.
Friend of mine, Canadian, ex military, marine architect, dId presentations to the DR Navy and police years ago. He designed and built a very stable, offshore patrol boat capable of outrunning the go fasts used by drug runners. It fell on deaf ears. They could have been built in the DR. The project would have employed a lot of Dominicans. Some things are not meant to be.

How many here know how many fast boats have been gifted to the DR? Hint: these are not the first.
