The Ministry of Environment has ordered a halt to a major development underway with two sections for around 300 riverside apartments on a northern capital city green belt. This is not the first halt order. These had been issued in the past, but unheeded to by the developers.
The developers had obtained a permit from the City Hall of the National District that authorized a low- impact project. The neighborhood groups say the development can in no way be described as low impact.
For the construction of the apartment buildings and commercial plaza, reportedly heavy equipment tore down large areas of forests on the green belt. For months, the residents had sought to appeal to the City Hall and the Ministry of Environment with the construction continuing.
Only when the neighbors persisted and took the case to the media and appealed to President Luis Abinader, were actions...
