We've found a cheap flight from the frigid far North to Punta Cana for the first two weeks of January. We'd originally hoped to fly to more centrally located Puerto Plata, but the ticket price for the dates we wanted was almost double compared to the Punta Cana ticket. Strange but true.
Wanting to travel around a little as well as beach lounge but not being the all-inclusive types, now we're wondering what would be a good itinerary for two weeks flying in and out of Punta Cana.
Is it possible to overland at least one way to the north coast and then on into Haiti maybe for several days?
Or would it be better to travel on the DR's southern coast, given we're starting from Punta Cana?
I'm a die-hard backpacker, but am travelling with a pal who wants to stay at places a notch or two up from what I'm used to: nothing too special, just a clean place, warm showers and a fan near a swimmable sea (US $20-30 would probably be our max most nights).
Any suggestions on some places to go/stay and budget conscious ways to get there?
Is it worth the trouble to cross the border and spend some time in the Cap Haitien area before heading back?
Thanks to all of you in the know for the help. We're really looking forward to finally getting to the DR and seeing a place we've heard so many great things about first hand!
