We've all heard the expression 'He (or she) is in the prime of their life'.

So I was amused the other day by a maelstrom of bickering brought on by a news commentator saying a 'woman in her 50s' wasn't in her prime' and should not run for political office.

What is considered a woman's prime, or a man's?
Certainly if it is only about sex I'd say a woman is prime 28-36, and a man 27-45. My personal opinion is that women past 30 are more passionate, certainly less inhibited and know more what they enjoy and aren't embarrassed to pursue it.

But if you throw in life experiences, maturity, responsibility and dependablity then my age shifts upward for what I think is prime. (oh and cooking too).

As you yourself get older does your opinion does your opinion of what is being in your prime shift?

Some women prefer older men because of maturity and emotional stability (not just financial). A few men prefer older women too.

So I would say a woman can easily be considered in her prime in her 50s... maybe into her early 60s. Same for a man. After that, well I'm already there.....past my prime.

Prime isn't all physical and I accidently fell into my own minefield the other day by commenting on the physical attractiveness of women in a photo posted on DR1 while inadvertently shunning the older women.

I'd much rather have a beer with a woman, Dominican, Haitian or Gringa who can discuss some life events, with a sense of humor and that has somewhat established themselves. Of course the cultural and education divide does mean this can be limited on many subjects or current events when chatting with locals, many who have never left the island.

I always chuckle to myself when I see a much older man with a 20-something girl here in Sosua - you know their conversations must be profound, certainly not 'prime'. Or they just sit & watch YouTube videos together?

Everything I have ever read is that women are in their sexual peak as they get older, I think it's around 40, and men have their sexual peak in their late teens and early twenties. At 45 a man is way past his peak. I have not always been Saint Maria, I know a thing or two about this.

Not my words but: t isn't age, it is circumstances. If I want children then a woman in/done with menopause is 'past her prime'. if I want to enjoy retired life but still actively travel then a woman that is infirm from age would be 'past her prime'.

Infirm certainly isn't prime at any age, and it can happen for several reasons.

I think I was not yet past my peak at 45, but I noticed a big drop past at 52 and past 70, well obviously the peak has long past.
Some women who call themselves cougars may be peaking later in life, hence the search for a younger man.

How unfair is society to women:
A man gets some gray hair - he's distinguished; a woman - she needs to hide those roots
A man gets a dad-bod; a woman becomes frumpy
A man gets laugh lines; a woman gets crow's feet
And there are reams of jokes about menopause, and more words to insult older women like: biddy, drama queen, battle-axe, desperate, irrational, hormonal, old bat, shrill, bossy, bitchy, ditzy, full-figured (not in a good way)....while men get a few: grumpy, codger or curmudgeon.

I know men i their 60s who wont touch a women over 25. I also know guys in their 60s who wont touch women under 40. No idea about an individual's sexual peak nor do I care. I keep it real simple. Good hygiene, good health, good performance. No women under 35.

When it comes to the women in this country?
i've yet to meet a Dominican women who hasn't asked me about whats in my pocket (how much money I make/have) or whats in my pants (I think yall get the point) often within an hour or two of first meeting them. It's a lot of fun being a single gringo here but if I were looking for a Spanish speaking wife I'd a probably have moved to Argentina or Spain, lol, dfinitely not the Dominican Republic.

Before I get splattered with verbal (diarer) hysteria...
I know there are plenty of good Dominican women on the island but I'm speaking from my own personal experiences over the last 11 years, not yours.

Women and men are different. Women are in their physical prime from 18-22, perhaps 23. Men are in their physical prime (think active, on the ground military service or general labor) around 24-34 but their social and political prime around 35-65. Women who marry early and belong to powerful or capable families often achieve significant social and political influence later in life, around 45-65. They are often in charge of groups of younger women and take part in decision making that is related to the trajectory of life of younger, unmarried women in their social and cultural group.

*bombs explode, dogs begin howling, the earth opens up, the world ends for those who want to believe the current, modern Western ridiculez*

Men and women are valued for different characteristics at different times in their lives. Socially and politically men are valued for their ability to produce, and to exert power and influence. On a lower, more vulgar/base level young men are valued for their energy and vitality. Sure Pedro from the slums with the guevaso and the cool hair cut may be someone that a woman would have interest in having sex with, or hanging out with, but he is not regarded very highly by "society", especially not on an overall social or political level. He exerts little power, has little influence and probably doesn't have any savings or many assets other than a motor, if that.

In a pure patrilineal society, or in the upper social classes, which almost always are patrilineal regardless of culture, younger women are valued for their ability to reproduce. It is their superpower. The one thing that no other creature in this world can do - give birth to new baby humans. As such, they are valued for their chastity, appearance, health, and ability to play their part in the social order of expanding the family. This largely involves behaving in a demure, respectful, submissive fashion. This allows their husband and family to focus their energies outwardly - gaining economic and social currency and being able to exert influence, providing the family with safety/protection, economic plenty and positive social relationships. Their primary role within the family is the creation and proper raising of new members of the family as well as ensuring the lower level functions and order of the home are consistently cared for such that the home is a comfortable and well functioning refuge from the chaos and lack of order that typify the world at large.

In a matriarchal society (there are no known pure matriarchies in the world), or better said the sectors of society that embrace matriarchal values and cultural norms, women typically have much more freedom to do as they please. They are typified by a lack of a father in the household, or a father or step-father who makes decisions along with the woman, or defers to the woman. Often in a matriarchal society the women are involved in some sort of productive labor that requires a significant portion of their time and attention and allows them to satisfy the needs of the household, in contrast to a patriarchal society in which the men work and the women are responsible primarily for "house and home", which includes their primary responsibility of raising and ensuring the safety and future productiveness of the children. Matriarchal societies, or better said the sectors of the population that adopt the cultural and social practices of matriarchy typically exhibit lesser development, greater economic hardship, and lesser ability to defend and protect themselves, or to exert influence on other segments of society or other societal groups.

A woman in her 50's has reached the age of menopause. There are a bevvy of symptoms that typify menopause. Amongst them are hormonal and physiological changes that affect decision making and quite frankly, emotional stability. Historically in human societies, women in general, and certainly women undergoing menopause are not selected as political leaders due to the potential for political instability or problems resultant from the conditions and symptoms typical of menopause.

The Dominican Republic's elite, upper and up until very recently middle class exhibits purely Patriarchal social and cultural values. It is no surprise that it would be thought inappropriate for a woman to attempt to hold political office, especially an older woman going through menopause.
