Several places of that description in the Colonial Zone - do a search here on DR1 or on Google - Hotel Frances, Hostal Nicolas de Ovando or Doña Elvira.

Hotel Palacio

You might look at the Hotel Palacio. I stayed in the Senior Suite in September and it was very nice. Two large rooms (20 ft cielings), large bed, minibar, large jacuzie, computer w/internet, balcony, and nice furniture. It is in the Zona Colonial, one block from the Conde( upscale shopping street) and was $118 US per night including tax. The service was excellent. The building is beautiful, old ( 1850 ? ) and formally owned by a former President (Baez). They offer a breakfast buffet for $8 US. They are adding a pool and there is evidence of some construction inside, but it is not all torn up. They do have a web site, just google Hotel Palacio. Enjoy !

Hotel Atarazana

I am still looking for suggestions myself, but unless I find something MUCH better, I'll likely be booking at the Hotel Atarazana. http://www.hotel-atarazana.com/ It was recently renovated by the owner who's an architect. My e-mails to them have been replied to promptly and extremely warmly. If that's what I can expect from my hosts, it sounds good! And I REALLY want to walk down that staircase!

I stayed at Atarazana several months ago. The hosts are by far some of the best you will find. The hotel is very quiet as there are only 6 guest rooms. Your free buffet breakfast is prepared just for you. Breakfast was ham, eggs, rolls, fresh fruit, coffe, juice, etc. Be sure to take a nice bottle of wine to sip on the rooftop while overlooking the city. Hotel Atarazana is about a 3 minute walk to Plaza Espana and many fine restaurants. Try to rent one of the rooms with the balcony. The balcony is small but room enough for two people.

Booked!

Okay bigbird, I'm convinced! Since I started searching, nothing has come near my impression of the Atarazana and your comments confirm that. I'll be happy to live it all for myself.

I hope you enjoy Atarazana as much as I did. This is a link for a map of Santo Domingo. Just zoom in on the map to locate Atarazana.

If you are looking for peace and quiet Atarazana is a good choice. Be sure to take the spiral staircase to the roof. Nothing fancy up there, just peace and solitude. There is also a very small garden area with a 4 seat bar on ground level. This is where breakfast is served.

The time we spent there I felt like we were the only ones at Atarazana. I first became impressed with the rapid email response. Everything after that was just as good.

Be sure to let us know how your stay was.

Construction or not, it look very attractive!

The web site may be in construction but the pictures that I was abel to see were very convincing to me. It looks like the Atarezana is a very nice hotel and well located.
