I know that flights are getting more expensive, but this is absurd to me. Last year I purchased a round-trip ticket to Santo Domingo 2-3 weeks before I left for Christmas and it cost me less than $500.
Now in late October they are anywhere from $780-$1,000 to anywhere in the DR. Does anyone know whether American Airlines will add more flights later on, or is this what we have to deal with?
I was told if I wanted to go I should buy them now as they will only get more expensive, but I refuse to pay so much money for a flight when more than likely I will wind up sitting next to someone who paid $350 for theirs. I know thisa is the way the game is played but it still sucks.

Buy now! The prices of tickets will only go up with the holidays fast approaching!

This does'nt make sense. Why would anyone pay so much more money(round trips at $1,500?) for a COACH ticket to the DR from NYC? Something has to give here...or am I missing something?
As far as I'm concerned, there is no way that a round-trip to the DR is worth more than $500 at ANY time of the year.
And from what I understand, it is the return portion of the flight that is more expensive. What a surprise THAT is...

Increase price of petroleum is doing quite a job on the airline industry.

BTW, the DR-US route is more expensive than vice versa due to taxes and higher cost of airline fuel, which is higher here than in the US due to transport costs.

You can't blame the airline for you guys who insist on flying in holiday periods. If you traveled 10 days earlier or later you would save half. By you guys paying a premium for holiday travel it allows the airline to give us a break for off-peak travel. Thanks.

First of all, messiah of the obvious, I know this. Also, since I work for a living I cannot choose the times I fly. I can only go when I can go, no sooner and no later.

What flight dates are you looking for??

The absolute worst time to fly-I can leave anytime around Dec. 22nd in the afternoon and onwards, needing to get back by the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the year(Jan. 2nd. or 3rd.).

So I guess it does make sense then, you were only venting. I thought you were truly unaware.

American Airline always adds an extra flight to Santiago and Santo Domingo Im surprised thay havent done so yet since their flights are so packed. i would suggest for you to buy now. The worst thing that can happen is for the fare to decrease and when that happens you get a REFUND.

Only if the identical fare basis you hold decreases. Chances are these additional flights will have a different fare basis, requiring you to pay a ticket change fee and receive a credit, not refund for difference as the original tickets for not full Y fare tickets.

Continental also usually flies a bigger plane and adds a second flight on their ewr-sdq route for the holidays. This year they only have one flight a day and it's a 757-300.

These flights have extensive layovers. But I figure...if I land in Puerto Rico can I leave to visit somebody and come back to the airport when the plane is ready to go? May sound like a dumb question but I'm not sure about this one.

I noticed that AA has a layover on the 22nd arriving in PR around 10:30 at night. You could reserve a hotel and party all night, check out by 2:00pm and catch the flight leaving at 4:30. Technically your check in luggage should transfer over to the other flight.

Consider it a $459 r/t flight around X-Mas and quickie trip to PR for free:classic:

Thats not a bad deal........

..........since the tax portion is $115.60. Perhaps that was the rate each way before tax!

Prices out of hand

I've been searching airline prices for November even with one stop.... it's $600 without a half-day to day layover, other than JetBlue. Talked to supervisor and said round-trip from Tampa to JFK to Santiago and back....407us...Total. For me it's not bad because I have family 10 minutes from the airport and I get to fly a great airline. My sister just got in tonight from JFK to Tampa great flight and on-time no problems as always.IMO they are one of the only airline's looking out for the people and making money at the same time.;)

Well I personally believe that Continental is not going to last much in the Dominican market. The only reason which I believe that the airline has been able to survive in their is because it is the only one in Newark. Many people making connections are not going to wat to travel to JFK and there is a Dominican population in NJ.
