I watched today.
Yes of course pilots absolutely had to know they had 1,500 lbs of dead weight. More than the 4 passengers weight.
Whether they knew what was in the 28 suitcases is a question, but any pilot not at least suspicious of the contents would be lying.

If I am not mistaken one the arguments brought up was whether the flight was classified as private or commercial. The DR argued the flight was considered private so the pilots were responsible, but the pilot union said it should be considered commercial.

I am not confused at all. If the pilots were aware they were carrying drugs, then they would be guilty.
