All things Dominican, NYC

Headed to New York City with my Dominican wife to see a few shows, xplore the city. Any recommendations on Dominican restaurants in or near NYC?? There are 2 in Zagat-- El Malecon and Mamajuana, that sound OK.

Are there any Dominican highlights in or near NYC we might want to explore??

El Presidente on Broadway & 165th has been there for ages. Not sure how it is now but it used to have decent food. The service is horrible and apathy hangs in the air. Just like back home.

Yes,

Mambi Steak house. right down the block from el malecon. Very much like hermanos Villares on avenida independencia en santo domingo. Its always full and the food is always fresh. You feel like your in the DR

I found this comment about their service. Riotous. Amazing that they can get away with that service in the US. Maybe they can't!!

Good food, poor, poor service
I love the food from this restaurant, but sometimes I opt for another restaurant. These ladies are a bit lazy. I was calling last week to place an order for pick up... lady puts me on hold. After 5 mins I hang up. I call again, no answer. I call again, puts me on hold, but by that time I had driven there already. I go in and guess what? They are all chatting! it's NOT busy! they kept putting me on hold to gossip! I was shocked!

I ate up at mambi yesterday! Get this, I had a plate of Pollo Guisado with rice. 7 bucks, but they charged me 3.50 for a glass of chinola?????? They rob me here in nyc too.

Seems to me that people, their attitudes and behaviors are pretty much the same the world over. There seems to be little to no difference if first or third world or developing country and dealing with others. Laziness, a sense of entitlement,anger, hostility and a sense of 'je ne sais quois' seems to be universal. We really don't treat each other very well anywhere in the world. When I lived in Cairo, government workers sipped tea(IN FRONT OF YOU) while you stood in line to be served!! They appeared to be soooo nonchalant about it. They had no qualms about it!! DR1 members seem to identify and label certain behaviors as Dominican. I say that person is universal,anywhere in the world.

How about La Marina on Dyckman ?

I have not been since they re-open, but the setting is spetacular.

Just make sure, you don't go on week ends, especially if they have a concert.
