As productive sectors struggle to get back to work, the mango producers of Peravia face the challenge of their mango harvest in the summer. Farms have been allowed to continue to operate, but one thing is to harvest the fruit, another to have it delivered to consumers.
“Airlift is suspended to Europe,” says Rafael Leger, speaking for the Peravia province producers. “We are hoping the Covid-19 situation will be resolved in time for large shipments of the fruit by freighters from May to September,” he told El Dinero. Mango exports to Europe have been growing since 2015 when the country exported US$15.6 million, then US$20.1 million in 2016. Exports in 2017 were US$19.6 million, but these increased again in 2018 to US$23.9 million and were US$25.4 million in 2019.
Mango exports to the United States were US$2.6 million in 2019. The main markets in the US for Dominican mangos are buyers in New Jersey...
