Eighteen Haitian migrants were apprehended along with a vehicle after a high-speed chase with Dominican Army troops in the northwestern province of Valverde.
The driver, identified as Pedro Julio Martínez, attempted to evade a military checkpoint near the General Benito Monción Fortress in Mao but was eventually caught in the town of Boca de Mao.
When the authorities intercepted the gray Honda CRV, Martínez abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by pursuing soldiers.
18 Haitian migrants were packed inside the vehicle as evidence of the people-smuggling operation.
Both the detainees and the vehicle were transported to the 4th Infantry Brigade headquarters in Mao, where they were handed over to the Migration Agency (DGM). Martínez will be presented before the Public Ministry to face charges related to human...
