Medical tourism is a major industry in the Dominican Republic. Santiago is a leader in attracting foreign customers and patients for quality medical services at a lower cost.

The Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago (HOMS), a major private medical center in Santiago, recently received a RD$45 million loan from the Banco de Reservas, the government commercial bank, to improve its Health & Wellness Center that caters to foreigners. A hotel, conference hall, hundreds of doctors’ offices, and a small shopping center will be added to the Health & Wellness Center facilities. Overall, the new facilities will cost nearly RD$79 million.

Are they going to use the vacant hotel/convention center that was built and never used just a short distance away from HOMS ?
That would make sense before the place falls down on its own.

Windy. What medical services are they offering for tourists? Are we talking about services like plastic surgery or services like hip and knee transplants, non invasive heart correction procedures, etc. About five years ago, tourists were being warned to avoid plastic surgery procedures in the DR because of high infection rates.

Not only high infection rates but several doctors were found guilty of using over the counter silicone and concrete powder as fillers. Basically anything they could inject into a woman's butt cheeks, they were using. Except medical grade fillers.

Whoa! Concrete powder? Seriously? Now that’s a butt you could truly crack walnuts on! 😆

I did go to the HOMS hospital three years ago for heart testing after I was diagnosed with Arrhythmia. I was wait listed for testing in Canada and didn’t want to wait. I was heading back to the DR anyway. The cardiologist‘s diagnosis was correct. His diagnosis was confirmed by my cardiologist in Canada. I wouldn’t have an issue using their services again for certain things. if I required invasive surgery, I would go elsewhere.

When I read "Hundreds of doctors' offices" that's the first thing that came to my mind.

Who owns/built that anyway?

They would be competing with Mexico for many services including plastic surgery. Their latest medical tourism draw is bariatric surgery. Surgery to reduce obesity.

A brand new facility is being built next to the current HOMS. It has been under construction for at least a year.

I know a women from L.A. who was running an after care clinic/ retreat for patients
who came down here for plastic surgery but unfortunately the Covid craze put
her out of business. She's now operating illegally in the state of California.

There is a thread regarding board certified or government approved Dominican plastic surgeons.

Some of them are absolute masters at both reconstruction and aesthetic procedures, while there are a few that call their patients “barbies” and mostly do unnatural augmentations.

The reputable Dominican surgeons provide a 1-2 week stay post surgery in an apartment with a nurse on call and regular doctor visits.

We do not have these options in Canada without paying 3-4x what excellent surgeons charge in the DR. It takes research to weed out the cement mix surgeons from the barbie surgeons to find the great ones, but anyone with common sense would spend the time to do that.

The same goes for dental work. DR1 is the best source of information for this besides word of mouth or personal connections.

There are Dominican doctors and dentists that I would recommend over any in Canada, at least in the west.
