Are there any cruises that depart from Puerto Plata or that you can otherwise board for the first time in Puerto Plata? I was just thinking that if I spend some extended time on the North Coast, taking a weeklong or so cruise around the Carribean might be fun. Never taken a cruise before so don't know if this is possible.

If nothing out of Puerto Plata, are there any other Dominican ports you can initially depart a cruise from?

La Romana on Costa Cruise Lines. We departed La Romana and return 7 days later. Went to Tortola, Martinique, Guadalupe...etc.

Pullmantur line departs out of Santo Domingo. Geared for Spanish speaking tourists. I managed well with my Spanglish. I rated it 3 stars and paid a 3 star price. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Went on both Pullman from Santo Domingo and Costa from La Romana. Both where great. Costa had a much nicer ship but Pullman had better food. Going again in 2 weeks on Costa.
It's a great inexpensive AI that you get to see other islands.

Best to check with immigration. All the Dominicans that boarded in both ports had passports and I did not notice any other paperwork.
I did notice gringos that where in the DR for more than 30 days had to pay the exit fees. (Non residents)

depends where you are coming from. From Santo Domingo it is a 4000 peso taxi ride, but Express Romana operates Bus Service from Santo Domingo to La Romana, then take a taxi to the cruise terminal.
