Hi,

Was just wondering if you could help with a legal question?
I am the owner of three lap dancing bars in the North of England and have just returned from a Kite-Surfing Holiday in Cabarrete (spelling?)
Whilst there were more than enough pretty young girls in the bars, particualrly 'Las Brisas' who were willing to entertain tourists for about RD$400.00 there were no established places for such entertainment, no Sauna's, massage parlours or Lap Dancing Clubs.
This got me thinking, so I asked as may tourists as I could if they wold use such establishments? The answer was a resounding YES!!
The reason was that they were a little uncomfortable with the language barrier and un-organised pricing struture that they found with the girls in the bars and would have felt more at home going somewhere like in the UK or US and paying an entrance fee and then a fixed fee for the girl of their choice. Likewise with a Lap Dancing bar they could see the girls danced very well already and wold have been quite comfortable paying a fixed fee per dance in a private bar (i think these were mainly the guys whose conscience would not let them do any more!!)

So, now I have explained myself.....IS IT LEGAL IN THE DR??

Thanks

Dancing Dollar (UK)

Is it legal or not? Not sure, but we do have a few lap dancing clubs in Santo Domingo.

I think your problems will be dealing with the local community and local police.

Maybe it would work in Caberete, it has a large transient tourist base.

Open one and let us know your experience, plus a VIP pass for me :)

One last thing... If you think you can organize Dominican girls, forget it :)

LMAO Robert! Boy ain't that the truth!

My understanding D.D. is that prostitution strictly speaking is not legal, but like most laws here, that one is not widely enforced. It's too profitable for the cops. Problem is that leaves you open to be continually squeezed by the local gendarmes for bribes.

There are (don't tell Alba how I know) more than a few gentlemen's clubs in Sosua already where the PYT's drop their laundry on stage. Haven't seen the lap dance thing around here per se because they're kinda of all over you for free anyway just to get you to take them back. Here those clubs normally charge an exit fee for the girls, now up to like $500 pesos in Sosua, before you get the privelege of paying them for their services.

Like Robert said, I'd be leery of it even having lived here for awhile and understanding how things work. Be prepared to get a continual shake down in a semi-illegal business like that. If you can handle that with a shrug of your shoulders and march forward you should be made an honorary Dominican.

P.S.
The free pass for Robert is probably OK but if a couple of dark skinned guys with towels on their heads ask for the same deal you'd better say 'No!'. AZB and Missing_DR will bankrupt you! :: wink ::

Eating the dish???

LMAO - You guys are really quite funny (wouldnt have believed it from some of the other threads!!)

Criss - If your not eating after visiting your lapdancing club, your not asking the right questions I can assure you!! (or your really pig ugly and smell like moldy cheese) :)

Thanks for the comments, I feel quite positive about maybe doing something in Caberete now.

As for organising the girls, I have a spanish dancer working for me in the UK, she is really good and VERY FORCEFULL! even I dont tell her what to do, I would probably get her in on the recruitment and training.

I am going to have a look myself ofcourse (should be able to get back over in the next 4-6 weeks) but does anyone here know of a building in Caberete that would be suitable for this kind of thing? and that is available for lease?

All other comments are more than welcome and ofcourse VIP passes will be given to all those who contribute!

I did a little investigating on this for a New-York friend who was looking into making this kind of an investment here. It's funny, but most Dominicans don't seem to know whether prostitution is illegal or not.

From reading the part of the constitution that adresses this, it seems it's illegal to even look at a prostitute, since the law seems to make it illegal to benefit in any way from the sale of sex.

However, there are over 200,000 full time prostitutes working fulltime in the DR and another 50,000 Dominican Prostitutes abroad (if the NOW is to be believed) Rumor has it that most of the clubs that cater to this sort of thing are run by the military, which is the Dominican equivelant of the mafia.

Although I've never seen a place in Cabarete with live shows, there do seem to pop up occasionally bars full of hookers, these are always run by Dominicans though. I saw one once with an Italian owner, and for some reason it lasted only a month or so. I never found out why, but that's a pretty short time to go out of business in, so legal problems would be a safe guess.

Mr Mike, that seems to be reliant on the interpretaion of the law by the police deciding the illegality of the infraction. Money influences the interpretation. There is a "topless bar" in sosua where one can pay the house to have the girl "leave with you". The owner is a German and the place has been open for years. Why dont you see if you can find out how "heavily" the owner has to "influence the interpretation" of the prostitution laws? That should clear up a few questions.

The answer is it's alot. And he still gets closed down from time to time. At least twice in the last year that I remember. And I remember at least a couple of times watching the PN/Military sweeping through the place.
